ASME Stamps

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers was founded in 1880 for the purpose of establishing uniformity for shop drawing symbols, pulleys, machine screws, and key seats. As the Industrial revolution blossomed, the need for standardization increased. Not only to allow for the integration of equipment, but also to ensure safety.

By 1884, ASME released their first set of testing standards for boilers and by 1915 the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code was published. Since its release, these codes and standards have been continually updated to keep pace with new materials and technology procedures.

At S.P. McCarl & Company, we hold the following ASME Code Stamps:

Pressure Piping applies to boilers in which steam or other vapor is generated at pressures exceeding 15 psig, and high temperature water boilers intended for operation at pressures exceeding 160 psig and/or temperatures exceeding 250 degrees F.

Superheaters, economizers, and other pressure parts connected directly to the boiler without intervening valves are considered as part of this scope.

Power Boilers (over 15 p.s.i. steam, 160 p.s.i. water and temperature exceeding 250 F) shall be stamped ASME (S) and National Boiler (N.B.) The "S" stamp by virtue of its description, also covers the "PP" area or pressure piping.

Pressure Vessels Fabrication or weld modifications of unfired pressure vessels require the ASME "U" and National Board Stamp.

The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors offers the Repair Certificate of Authoriztion and "R" stamp for the repair and/or alteration of boilers, pressure vessels, and other pressure-retaining items. Detailed requirements are included in the current edition of the National Board Inspection Code (NB-23).

An ASME stamp refers to the type of equipment and the appropriate ASME code that applies.

The stamp is a modified cloverleaf, the ASME symbol, with one or more letters in the center.

Each of these refers to a different application.
